Never Imagined
By GC SMITH
Coastal Carolina estuaries,
gently flow as rise and ebb
in familiar circular constancy
until thunderheads gallop
like a herd of wild horses,
to roil tranquility
with frothing waves
that strike fear
in the hearts
of fishers
in small
unstable
boats.
Sometimes,
too often,
the morning
newspaper
chronicles
tidal treachery
where fishers
have struggle
and, yes, died
merely for
trusting nature’s
mendacic
ways
